1
Quit smoking as soon as possible. Smoking is more dangerous than gaining a few extra pounds. To avoid gaining weight, try to focus on nutrient rich foods that will be lower in calories as a replacement for smoking. Because smoking is often a substitute for food, add sugar-free foods into your diet to compensate. Foods like carrots, popcorn, yogurt, fruits and nuts are a good place to start.

Eat smaller portions. You may find it beneficial to use a smaller dinner plate. Make it a game and try to be the last one finished with your meal, as eating more slowly will help fill you up faster. Take the time to really chew and enjoy each bite of food. Drink a large glass of water either before or during each meal. The water will give you a full feeling and will help you consume less food. When you have finished your meal, it is best to get up and walk away from the table to avoid overeating.

Brush your teeth or enjoy a sugar-free mint at the end of every meal. Most smokers will have a cigarette at the end of every meal. Replace this habit with something other than eating. Take a walk to help burn calories after meals.

Allow yourself snacks. People who quit smoking will usually experience the urge to snack. Stock up on low calorie snacks, take walks and take up a new hobby to keep your hands busy. This will help cut down on the urge to smoke and to snack. Get creative and find a system that works for you.
