How to Use Redding Balance Beam Scales

Scales measure weight, the product of an object's mass and the force of gravity. Some scales, such as electronic bathroom scales, do this by comparing an object to a programmed variable. Since these units are compact, they are frequent choices for home use. However, doctors and other health care professionals often use an analog model called a balance beam scale. Balance beam scales use known weights to counterbalance the weight of an object. They are accurate, easy to use and quick to calibrate. That's why you'll see them used in lieu of digital scales.

Instructions

    • 1

Calibrate the scale. Remove any objects from the plate. Turn the screw on the left side of the scale, underneath the beam until the balance beam zeroes out. The arrow on the beam will point to a "0" marker on the left ride of the scale.

    • 2

Place the object into the scale pan and hold it steady until it stops swinging; Redding scales have metal pans, making it easy to measure loose powder. Use a precision dispenser if you are working with an unwieldy substance, such as gun powder.

    • 3

Move the slider on the beam to the estimated weight of the object.

    • 4

Observe the left side of the Redding scale where the "0" indicator is located. Move the slider to a higher number if the indicator points above the "0." Move the slider to a lower number if the indicator points below "0."

    • 5

Remove the object from the pan. Zero the scale. Measure the weight again.
