Drink at least eight glasses of water a day to lose water weight. Drink at least eight to 10 glasses of water per day, more if you are breastfeeding or obese. When your body is dehydrated, it will overcompensate by retaining water. Experts recommended drinking at least 1/2 oz. of water per lb. of body weight daily.

Exercising in a swimming pool will help reduce water retention. Exercise regularly to flush out excess sodium and fluids through urine and sweat. Pool exercises such as water aerobics provide an added benefit; the water pressure helps force excess fluids out of your body tissues and into the bladder. Aim to exercise for at least 30 minutes, three times a week for best results.

Salt can cause water retention. Eat low-sodium foods and avoid adding table salt to your meals. According to the American Heart Association, adults should aim to consume no more than 1,500 mg of sodium per day. Reading food labels and avoiding processed foods can help you achieve this goal.
