How to Reduce Water Weight in Men

Water retention in men is usually relatively easy to address, since men do not experience the hormonal fluxes that frequently cause water weight in women. Although water retention can be related to serious medical issues in the kidneys or heart, it is more typically the result of poor diet or lifestyle choices. By making a few adjustments to your culinary practices, you will likely notice a decrease in water weight. This can improve both your health and appearance.

Cut down on the the amount of salt in your diet. Salt is a well known culprit of water weight and is prevalent in many of our foods. Instead of adding extra salt to your dinner, try another spice. Avoid fast food as it has an extremely high sodium content.

Drink cranberry juice. It is a natural diuretic that boosts kidney function and promotes a healthy excretory system.

    • 3

Consume at least eight glasses of water each day. Although it might seem counter-intuitive, dehydration can actually cause water retention. Your body will hold on to everything that you drink if it thinks that it is not getting enough water. Replace soda consumption with water, since sodas contain sodium and other chemicals that cause retention.

Choose a good multivitamin that is high in vitamins A and C. Both of these will prevent you from gaining water weight.

    • 5

Reduce alcohol intake. Alcohol disrupts the way your body processes food and fluids. Since your body interprets it as a poison that it needs to remove, alcohol will take precedent for excretion over everything else, including water. This can lead to bloating.

    • 6

Reduce your sugar intake. A diet high in sugar can elevate your insulin levels, which will cause you to retain sodium. This in turn will lead to water weight.

Engage in exercises that give your calves and thighs a workout. Since gravity causes water to move downwards in the body, retained fluid often ends up in the legs and feet. Exercising these areas gets the blood flowing and helps move the water upwards for processing.
