1
Make an appointment to see your doctor to make sure there isn't a serious illness behind your loss of appetite. Many conditions, such as kidney and lung disease or diabetes, can cause this. See a dentist also; mouth problems or badly-fitted dentures can cause loss of appetite.
-
2
Create your own diet plan that includes plenty of foods high in calories and protein. Some staples in this category include meat, potatoes, pasta, rice and cheese. Avoid foods high in sugar, and eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Tantalize your taste buds with new dishes or food combinations.
-
3
Make your food look nice. A well-presented meal will be more appealing. Keep your eating table, utensils, and cooking area clean and pleasant.
-
4
Have regular meal times. Often elderly people forget to eat or simply cannot be bothered. Try to eat smaller meals more often, as this will avoid that bloated feeling. Perhaps invite a family member or friend to eat with you, as this will ensure that you keep to your meal times. If you cannot do this, set an alarm to remind you to eat.
-
5
Try snacking. Many high-protein bars and shakes are available. However, don't fall into the trap of substituting snacks for reguar meals.
-
6
Try a high-calorie supplement, such as Ensure. This supplement comes in many flavors. You aso could make you own by blending fortified milk, fruit and ice cream.
-
7
Take light exercise such as walking. This will make you feel healthier and help you work up an appetite.
-
8
Depression can lead to loss of appetite. Leave the house, meet people, take part in activities that might cheer you up. Make an appointment with the doctor to discuss and evaluate your depression.
