How to Calculate Correct Weight for Height

According to the American Council on Exercise, simple ideal weight estimation requires three factors: gender, height and frame size. Determining your ideal weight gives you an idea of the average number that a healthy person of your height, frame size and gender should weigh. This allows you to determine if you need to gain, lose or maintain weight to obtain a healthy figure. A short equation will help you find your ideal weight.

Measure how tall you are while not wearing shoes or socks. Hold the measuring tape from the back of your heels to the top of your head and record the result in inches. To get an accurate measurement, it is helpful to ask a friend to assist you.

Find your body's frame size by wrapping your thumb and forefinger around the thinnest part of your wrist. If your fingers do not touch, your frame size is large, if they just barely touch, you have a medium frame and if they overlap each other, your frame size is small. If your height is 60 inches or below, skip this step.

    • 3

Write down how many inches over five feet (60 inches) you are. If you are less than or exactly 60 inches, write down "0."

    • 4

Multiply the resulting number based upon your frame size; if you wrote down zero, skip this step. If you have a small body frame, multiply by five, if you have a medium frame, multiply by six, and if you have a large frame, multiply by seven.

    • 5

Add 115 (male) or 100 (female) to the resulting number, zero being your resulting number if you are five foot or under. This is your ideal weight based upon your height.
