Ways to Measure BMI

A person's Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number which has been calculated based upon that person's specific height and weight. This calculation works to accurately estimate the amount of body fat the person being measured carries. It should be noted that BMI calculations are not a direct way to get the exact percentage of body fat. Studies by establishments such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the calculation is an alternative way to get a good idea for the percentage without undergoing more extensive, direct testing.
  1. Standard Method

    • The standard method of calculating BMI uses pounds and inches. The formula used to calculate BMI involves dividing your weight in pounds by your height in inches squared. This solution is then multiplied by 703.

For example, if you weigh 150 lbs and are 65 inches tall, your calculation would look like this: [150 ÷ (65)2] x 703 and results in the BMI measurement of 24.96. This is an average or normal weight according to the CDC.

    Metric Method

    • The metric method of determining BMI uses kilograms and meters. The formula used to calculate BMI involves using the metric system involves dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. This solution is then multiplied by 703.

For instance, if your weight is 68 kg and you are 165 cm (1.65 meters) tall, your calculation would look like this: 68 ÷ (1.65)2 = 24.98

    Children

    • A child's BMI is calculated by using either the standard or metric formula. Although the formulas are the same for determining both adult and child BMI, doctors and other health professionals also consider the child's age and sex when determining whether or not the child is obese.
