Will Pravastatin Help You Lose Weight?

Pravastatin is a member of the statin group of medicines and is prescribed to patients with high cholesterol to help lower blood cholesterol and other fatty substances in the blood. Overweight patients taking it are encouraged to lose weight through a healthy diet and exercise, but Pravastatin itself does not have an effect on weight loss.
  1. Effects

    • Pravastatin blocks enzymes in the body that produce cholesterol, thus lowering the total amount of cholesterol and other fatty substances in the blood.

    Weight Loss

    • Overweight people who have been prescribed Pravastatin because of high cholesterol levels are encouraged to lose weight by their doctors, in order to lower their risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular disease.

    Methods

    • Pravastatin does not help patients lose weight. It simply lowers blood cholesterol. The best way to lose weight while taking Pravastatin is to follow your doctor's recommendations on eating healthly (usually a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol) and exercising regularly. Pravastatin is most effective when these guidelines are followed. Successful weight loss and a healthy diet and exercise could also entirely remove the need to take Pravastatin.
