How to Increase Weight for Women

There is usually little concern or compassion for women who have trouble gaining weight because so many people obsess about being the right size or losing weight. When you rule out medical and psychological reasons for being thin, it is genetic. Two types of women are thin, those that do not eat a lot and those whose metabolism adjusts according to how many calories are consumed. If your metabolism adjusts, you will start to gain weight when you get older and your metabolism slows, but if you do not eat a lot, you can adjust your eating habits to gain weight.

    • 1

Figure your body mass index by using a BMI calculator. A calculator can be found at a local discount store. A score of 18 or less means you need to gain weight.

    • 2

Experiment with the number of calories you need for weight gain. Start with an extra 500 calories a day. Set a goal. Keep a log and adjust your calorie intake as needed according to results. Add the calories with foods such as beans, avocados, grapes, nuts, cheese and whole wheat bread.

    • 3

Eat four or five small healthy meals every day to increase your calorie intake by 500 calories. Gradually add more calories, if needed, for weight gain. Do not try to gain too fast.

    • 4

Exercise at a certain time each day. When you are trying to gain weight do weight training and exercises such a yoga and tai chi to tone muscles. They burn fewer calories than the aerobic exercises and keep your muscles toned.

    • 5

Sleep eight hours a day. If you can't sleep eight hours at night, take a nap. A well-rested person can control caloric intake and exercise better than a tired person.
