Effects of Hormonal Imbalances on Fitness

While not the sole decider of a person's physical fitness, there is a definite connection between hormones and weight control. More specifically, they can affect the loss or gain of fat in specific areas of the body.
  1. Women

    • There is a direct correlation between a woman's body fat and her estrogen levels. When estrogen levels increase, the body stores more fat; but then as those levels decrease, the body retains that fat as a means to try to preserve the estrogen levels. Estrogen supplementation does not appear to ameliorate this situation. This can create a frustrating cycle for the woman trying to get into shape.

    Men

    • Rocky Mountain Analytical indicates that men who have high levels of cortisol --- a hormone related to stress --- might experience increased sugar cravings, which can lead to weight gain. Increased body fat can increase production of aromatase, an enzyme that converts testosterone into estrogen. This increase in estrogen can contribute to enlargement of breast tissue in men, as well as weight gain.

    Solutions

    • Even with hormonal involvement, weight management and fitness are not impossible to accomplish. A low-carbohydrate diet can help diminish weight. Incorporating healthy fats into the diet helps discourage the body from retaining fat. Additionally, maintaining a regular schedule of aerobic activity also contributes to a reduction in body fat and an increase in fitness and endurance.

    Warning

    • No-fat or very low-fat diets should be avoided. The body needs a certain amount of fat to properly absorb and use many fat-soluble vitamins and minerals. Instead of eliminating fat, it is better to eliminate trans fats and increase the amount of natural fats in the diet.
