Responses to Aerobic Training

Aerobic training involves the use of the same large muscle group, such as the legs or arms, for a period of 15 to 20 minutes while maintaining an increased heart rate. While anaerobic exercise requires short bursts of energy, aerobic training requires endurance for low intensity activities.
  1. Physical

    • During aerobic activities, you will breathe more quickly, bringing more oxygen to your blood. Your heart will beat faster as the demand for oxygen-rich blood to your muscles increases. As more oxygen is delivered to your muscles, capillaries widen to remove carbon dioxide and lactic acid from your muscles.Regular aerobic exercise controls body fat and, according to the Mayo Clinic, reduces the risk of viral illnesses.

    Mental

    • As you participate in aerobic exercise, your body releases natural painkillers called endorphins. These hormones ease sore muscles and increase feelings of well-being. Aerobic exercise is shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety while increasing feelings of relaxation.

    Long-Term

    • Aerobic training keeps the muscles in your body strong, including the heart. This helps with mobility and mental acuteness. Health risks associated with chronic illness are reduced through regular aerobic training, and people who remain active may live longer than those who lead a sedentary lifestyle.
