According to a 2007 report from Harvard Medical School, being overweight contributes to heel pain and arthritis in the feet. People with weight issues develop a condition called plantar fasciitis that causes foot pain. Chicago podiatrist Dr. Lee Stein also notes that overweight people are susceptible to osteoarthritis, a degenerative disease causing cartilage deterioration and bone spurs.
Symptoms
-
Plantar fasciitis is characterized by sharp pains in the heel. The Mayo Clinic indicates that the disorder is worse right after waking up or when standing after being seated for a long time. Osteoarthritis causes swelling and tenderness in the joints, rashes and skin growths in the affected area, and limited motion.
Prevention/Solution
-
Plantar fasciitis is treated with anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids that help to reduce inflammation. A doctor may also prescribe orthotic splints or physical therapy. Arthritis is treated with physical therapy, medication and orthotic footwear. Many cases of plantar fasciitis and osteoarthritis can be prevented by maintaining a healthy weight.
