The Disadvantages of Juicing
Proponents of juicing claim it has many health benefits. They say you absorb nutrients better from juice than from whole fruits or vegetables and that juicing can prevent or even cure some illnesses. Some people find juicing enjoyable and tasty, but it does have some disadvantages for some people.-
Expense of Juicers
-
The cost of juicers varies depending on the brand and the model you select, but a review of juicers on Consumer Search in August 2010 indicates that many juicers cost $200 to $300. Depending on the size of your wallet, this may be expensive for you.
Freshly Made Juice Tastes Best
-
Juice tastes best when freshly made. Making up a large pitcher of juice ahead of time may not work well for you because the longer it sits in the refrigerator, the less tasty it becomes. Some people find it inconvenient to juice fruits and vegetables on a regular basis, though, because of the time it takes. Also, you may find it hard to juice at work or when out and about for the day.
Time Involved
-
Juicing takes less time than cooking a meal but it takes longer to peel and cut enough fruits and vegetables and prepare a fresh glass of juice for breakfast than it takes to prepare something like toast or a bowl of cereal. Busy people may find it difficult to work juicing into their schedule.
Lack of Fiber
-
While fruits and vegetables have plenty of fiber, juicing separates the juice from the fiber so the juice ends up containing little or no fiber. Fiber provides many health benefits, including aiding in the absorption of nutrients, boosting colon health and reducing the risk of colon cancer, lowering cholesterol, and preventing constipation. People that juice instead of eating whole fruits and vegetables may not get enough fiber in their diets.
High Glycemic Index
-
Many fruits have a high glycemic index, meaning they contain a lot of sugar. The juice of all fruits and vegetables contains more sugar than the whole fruits or vegetables, so even if a vegetable has a low glycemic index, its juice may contain a lot of sugar. People that need to limit their sugar intake, such as diabetics, may find juicing gives them too much sugar.
