Metabolism Problems Due to Taking Fat Burners Too Long

Fat burners stimulate metabolism by using a combination of manufactured and herbal ingredients. They can have adverse effects on your health if taken incorrectly and for a long period of time, and are not required to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
  1. Perception

    • Some believe that because fat burners are herbal, they are therefore safe. This is a myth; taking them long term can have negative metabolic side effects.

    Stimulants

    • Fat burners typically contain a stimulant, such as ma huang, often combined with caffeine and aspirin to speed metabolism.

    Metabolic Effects

    • Over time, the adrenal glands require more stimulants to get to the initial metabolic boost. In conjunction with the decreased caloric intake caused by the appetite suppressant, the metabolism slows down.

    Weight Gain

    • It becomes increasing difficult to maintain homeostasis when taking fat burners long-term. Once a person stops taking the pills, weight gain is imminent because the metabolism has slowed drastically.

    Internal Effects

    • Fat burners can increase respiration and heart rate and negatively affect other processes controlled by the central nervous system. By 2001, the FDA had reported 80 deaths associated with fat burners.
