Methods for Determining Daily Caloric Intake for Children

Evaluating Your Child's Nutritional Needs
-
Monitor your child's energy level. Exploration, movement, curiosity and seemingly constant growth are all signs of a healthy, thriving child. In addition to the child's energy level, you must monitor what kinds of food are being eaten every day. The amount of protein, fat, sugar and other carbohydrates being ingested can directly affect your child's energy level and progress. It's also important to note how much activity is incorporated into your child's schedule. Does she go to lots of organized groups, athletic or otherwise? Does he regularly play outdoors, maintaining near constant motion? Does she lead a sedentary lifestyle, playing video games, watching television or generally just not doing much active play? These are factors in determining how many and what type of calories your child will need.
Determining Daily Caloric Intake for Your Child

There are a variety of Calorie Calculators available online, where you can factor in age, height, weight and activity level. The average needs range from 650 calories per day at ages 0 to 5 month and increase up to 2,000 per day at ages 7 to 10. Boys typically require more calories than do girls, but the amount of activity is the most important factor to consider.
Calories-Good Vs. Bad
-
In addition to learning how many calories your child needs to meet her nutritional needs, you also need to monitor what kind of calories are being ingested. Empty calories will not be helpful in allowing her to grow and thrive. Constant intake of sugar, processed foods and fast food will send a child on a path to a sedentary, lackluster lifestyle. Children need as much healthful food as possible, including fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains, to ensure that they will grow and lead healthy, productive lives.
