Instructions

  1. Calculate Your BMI

    • 1

Weigh yourself in pounds or kilograms on a body scale. Remove your shoes and heavy clothing for an accurate measurement. Record the weight on paper.

    • 2

Measure your height in inches or meters. Remove your shoes. Stand straight with your back against a wall. Make a pencil mark where the top of your head meets the wall. Use a tape measure or meter stick to measure the distance from the mark to the floor. Record the number next to your weight.

    • 3

Calculate your BMI using the imperial formula by multiplying your weight in pounds by 703. Divide this number by your height in inches squared (your height times itself). Calculate your BMI using the metric formulas by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared (your height times itself).

    • 4

If your BMI is below 18.5, you are in the "Underweight" category. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is "Normal Weight," 25 to 29.9 is "Overweight," and 30 or higher is "Obese."

    • 5

Determine your ideal weight by replacing the weight measurement in the formula with your desired weight. Experiment with the formula until you find a weight for your height to achieve a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. Lower your BMI by losing weight through diet and exercise.
