How to Boost Metabolism Without Drugs

Rather than taking the pharmaceutical route, however, there are many ways to boost your metabolism naturally with equal to greater effects.

      Eat more frequently throughout the day. In order to keep your metabolism fortified with constant fuel, it is necessary to keep eating throughout the day without skipping meals. Eating every three hours while you're awake, or at least five to six times a day will help boost your metabolism and keep your digestive system constantly working. Make sure each meal is balanced with smaller portions, so that you have miniature meals that include a carbohydrate, healthy fat and protein in each meal.

      Choose healthier options that make your digestive system work. Certain foods naturally boost your metabolism. Foods like celery, leafy green vegetables, oats, bran and wheat all make your digestive system work hard to break down fiber that is impossible to digest, meaning that energy is burned by simply eating them. Celery, for instance, causes the body to burn more calories trying to break it down and digest than it provides, which has a metabolism-boosting quality.

      Lubricate your system to keep it flushed with beneficial drinks. Natural metabolism-boosting drinks such as green tea provide essential antioxidants that not only help boost energy, but also boost the immune system. Drinking at least 64 oz. of water throughout the day, along with these metabolism boosting drinks, helps flush the body of harmful toxins, and keep you hydrated.

      Circuit and interval train to spark your system. Your metabolism is affected severely by your fitness level. Circuit training, which means completing a series of exercise without a break in between, is a good way to percolate the metabolism. An example of a circuit training routine would be performing push-ups, sit ups, squats, curls and dead lifts for one minute per exercise, without a break in between until each exercise has been completed once. Interval training is performing any aerobic exercise at full capacity for 30 seconds of every three minutes of exercise. Performing your exercise routines in these fashions causes the body to burn more fat during rest periods when you are not exercising throughout the day, and in your sleep, hence boosting the metabolism.

Although it is important to exercise three to five times in at least 20 to 30 minute intervals throughout the week to boost your metabolism naturally, it is equally important to rest your body. Sleeping and taking appropriate breaks after exercise will allow your body to adjust to the changes that are being made. Aim to sleep at least six to eight uninterrupted hours within each 24 hour span in order to boost your metabolism and recuperate from a hard day's work.
