How to Convert Calories to Kilojoules

Keeping to your diet while traveling abroad can be really hard. You want to sample all the delicious and interesting food you encounter, and planning meals isn't the same as when you're at home. To make it even more difficult, international food labeling isn't the same in every country. Calories and kilojoules are both measurements of energy, but many countries' food packages list one and not the other. Here's how to convert calories to kilojoules and plan for your diet.

Remember that one calorie in the American system is actually one kilocalorie (kcal). Some international food labels list kilocalories instead of calories, so don't let this confuse you.

    • 2

Keep this conversion in mind: 1 kilocalorie (kcal) is equal to 4.182 kilojoules (kJ). It might be easier to round 4.182 down to 4 if you can't bring a calculator with you to the supermarket.

    • 3

Multiply the number of calories by 4.182 to learn the number of kilojoules. For example, a 1/2-cup serving of white rice has 160 calories and 669.12 kilojoules.
