Fruit Diets to Detox Your Body

A detox diet removes toxic substances from the body and aims to minimize or eliminate the amount of chemicals that a person ingests. Some use detox diets as a means of losing or controlling weight. It is frequently used by those who practice holistic medicine.
  1. Why Fruit?

    • Fruits are used in a detox diet because many are loaded with vitamins, minerals and fiber, and have a high water content. A fruit detox diet can include any kind of fruit: fresh, frozen, dried, canned or juiced.

    Types of Fruits

    • Fill up on the following fruits in a fruit detox diet: apples, bananas, blackcurrants, grapefruits, oranges, raisins, pears, nectarines, raspberries, strawberries, peaches, plums, kiwis, figs, grapes, mangoes and watermelon (see Resources).

    Fruit Juices

    • Homemade fruit juices and fruit juice smoothies are also used. Store-bought juices should be pure and unsweetened.

    Benefits

    • Many claim increased energy, improved digestion, clearer skin, better concentration, regular bowel movements and an overall feeling of well-being.

    Side Effects

    • The most common complaint on a fruit dextox diet is headache. Other side effects include diarrhea, constipation, irritability, acne and hunger (see Resources).

    Cautions

    • Pregnant and nursing women, children and people with anemia, kidney disease, thyroid disease, cancer, eating disorders, chronic conditions and particular genetic diseases should not try a fruit detox diet.

    Starting and Ending

    • Detox diets are most often used from 3 to 7 days. After a detox diet, healthy foods should be introduced slowly. Many critics claim them to be worthless, dangerous and unnecessary.
