How to Figure Out How Much Fat to Lose

While the media and popular culture may try to convince you that there is a single ideal weight and body fat composition, this is not the case. Individual differences such as body type and height mean that each person should seek to achieve a weight and body fat composition that is right for her frame. Accordingly, it is important to take into consideration your body and its needs when determining weight loss goals.

Instructions

    • 1

Make an appointment with your physician for a health assessment. Ask the doctor to measure your current height and weight. Ask the doctor for any suggestions as far as how much weight you should lose and how to go about doing so in a healthy manner.

    • 2

Use your height and weight to obtain your current body mass index, or BMI. Have your physician do this during your appointment or alternatively use the Body Mass Index Calculator to determine it on your own.

    • 3

Access the Body Mass Index Tables. Locate your height in inches in the first column of the table. Locate the number 25 in the top row of the table. Scroll down the column containing the number 25 until you reach the row where your current height is located.

    • 4

Take note of the number located at the juncture between the row your height is in and the column containing the number 25; this represents the maximum amount you can weigh and remain in a normal weight range. Subtract this number from your current weight to determine the amount of weight you should lose to enter a normal weight range.

    • 5

Evaluate your weight history throughout your adult life. Think about your weight at different points and when you felt most comfortable, healthy and happy.

Use this information as well as your doctor's recommendations and your BMI results to determine the healthy weight you are most naturally able to maintain.
