Trade in two calorie laden drinks per day for a wiser, low-cal choice.

Trade in two drinks a day for water, tea or other low calorie drink. A vanilla bean frappuccino with whipped cream tips the scales at 500 calories. If this drink were traded in for a cup of coffee, 1 tsp. of sugar and 1 tbsp. of milk, you would save more than 400 calories in one swap. One soda a day traded in for a water saves 100 calories. Multiply that by one year and you just saved 10 lbs. from piling onto your body and you didn't have to go hungry to do it. Make small but sensible changes that you can commit to and you'll shed excess pounds without an empty stomach.

Researchers are finding saccharine-loaded drinks and snacks may lead to excessive weight gain.

Dump that diet soda or saccharine laden snack down the drain. A recent study from Purdue University's Ingestive Behavior Research Center concluded that artificial sweeteners may mislead the body's ability to count and burn calories. This leads to increased food intake and weight gain. Turning to artificial sweeteners in an attempt to control weight could be causing your body to misjudge food and therefore gain weight.

Load your plate with wise choices.

Keep your portion size the same -- as well as your frequency of eating throughout the day. If you make changes to this you will likely go hungry and fall back into the same troublesome pattern when the "lack of eating" days are behind you. Make better choices about what your portions consist of. Eat until your are satisfied, but load up on the vegetable and fruit portion of your plate and keep the meats to the size of a deck of cards. Avoid fats and sweets most days. Keep in mind that it feels much better to look good in a pair of jeans all year long than it does to eat a plate full of meat and cheese for 20 minutes -- but pay for it later by having to wear loose-fitting sweats all the time.

Take the stairs without holding the banister rather than riding an escalator.

Take the stairs without holding the banister rather than riding the escalator. Park in the back of the parking lot and walk to the store rather than drive around for 10 minutes waiting for an open spot with the shortest walk to the door. Strap on a couple of ankle weights when doing housework for 15 minutes. Keep in mind the human body was designed to do work, not find ways out of it. Look for small ways to make simple changes that do not disrupt your life but do provide for a little extra workload for your body. Each of these steps will help you burn about 30 extra calories. If you think creatively, this reserve of 30 calories will widdle you away and you're still not wasting your time going hungry on a diet.

Alternate weight training and aerobic exercise every other day.

Alternate a weight training regime with a 20 minute aerobic exercise every other day. In his book "Body for Life", personal trainer and author Bill Phillips explains that weight training pushes muscles to the point of minor damage. Allowing these muscles to rest for 48 hours gives your body time to rebuild muscle tissue which raises the metabolism and renders your body slimmer and more toned. Aerobic exercise burns through calories quickly while increasing your body's metabolism as well. Increasing your metabolism causes your body to lose weight without hunger.
