Reduce your calorie intake. According to the Family Doctor staff, you have to cut out 500 calories from your daily intake to lose a pound of fat per week. For example, if your normally eat 2,000 calories a day, begin consuming only 1,500 calories a day. Fill your diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. Eat one to two cups of fruits and vegetables, one to two ounces of meat and two to three ounces of whole grains at meals.

Start exercising. Instead of watching television, go for a nice jog outside. You should plan on doing aerobic activity at least three times a week for 20 minutes. Physical activity not only helps you lose weight, it also can help reduce your stress levels. According to the Mayo Clinic staff, physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling more happy and less stressed. There are other fun ways you can get in a daily workout, such as playing basketball with a friend or dancing at a night club.

Do not begin a fad diet. Most fat diets are low in carbohydrates and calories, causing your body to lose water. Once your body gets re-hydrated, you will gain the weight back.
