Assess how much belly fat you want to lose. Measure your waistline with a tape measure and, if possible, get a body fat content measurement at your local gym.

Purchase foods high in protein. Foods high in protein include chicken, fish and beans. If gaining muscle mass is also a goal, remember to eat 1 g of protein per pound of body weight per day. For effective fat loss, eat four to six small meals a day instead of three large ones.

Reduce your fat and empty-calorie intake. While eating more protein will help reduce belly fat, continually taking in empty calories in items such as soda or fat from fast food meals may stall your progress.

Track your progress and adjust as necessary. Keep a detailed food journal of everything you eat. Include the amount of protein and compare with your rate of fat loss and adjust the amount of protein you eat everyday if necessary.
