How to Get Rid of Jowls When You Lose Weight

Losing a significant amount of weight can result in higher energy, improved health and a smaller clothing size. However, one downside to losing significant amounts of weight is the excess of sagging skin that is left over. A common area for loose skin to appear is on the neck and jaw, which results in a sagging jowl. Unfortunately, issues with sagging skin can't be resolved through strengthening exercises, and for many, surgical reconstruction is the most effective way to reduce excess skin on the neck and jowl area.

  1. Face-lift

    • 1

Schedule a consultation with a plastic surgeon to determine whether you are a good candidate for a traditional face-lift. He or she will examine the state of the skin on your jowl, your bone structure, wrinkles and hairline to determine an appropriate incision point. Seek consult with several different plastic surgeons to find the right one for you.

    • 2

Express your expectations about how you want your chin to look after surgery. This will help the plastic surgeon determine the best course of action when performing the operation.

    • 3

Tell your chosen surgeon about all medications and supplements you are currently taking. Most surgeons will have a set of pre-operative instructions to follow before the procedure.

    • 4

Schedule a "brown bag" appointment with your surgeon in advance. At a brown bag appointment, you will need to bring your current medications and non-prescription medications to the surgeon so he or she can identify any problems before you undergo surgery.

    • 5

Quit smoking before the procedure if you currently smoke. Because smoking decreases the amount of blood flow to the face, you may risk "skin death" (necrosis) at points of incision if you continue to smoke before or after the procedure.

    • 6

Allow yourself time to heal and rest after your surgery is completed, including avoiding strenuous activities and waiting to attend major social events for at least three weeks.
