How to Figure Out Weight Percentage Lost

When trying to lose weight, it is important to keep track of progress. Watching the number on the scale move down, or up, can be a great motivator. However, the number on the scale is not the only indicator of success. With a quick formula, it is also easy to calculate the percentage of body weight lost.

Instructions

    • 1

Record the starting weight. Wait at least one week to record a second weight. For accuracy, weigh yourself at the same time of day, wearing the same clothes.

    • 2

Subtract the beginning weight from the current weight. Record the difference.

    • 3

Divide the number of pounds lost by the starting weight. For example, if you lost 10 pounds and your starting weight was 180, the formula would be 10 divided by 180, or .056.

    • 4

Multiply the number from Step 3 by 100. Using that example, this would be 0.056 times 100, or 5.5 percent of body weight lost.
