Fastest Ways to Boost Metabolism

Metabolism determines calorie burn, and therefore, weight gain or loss.Surprisingly, heavy individuals have a higher metabolism than someone who weighs less, due to the exertion necessary to carry the added weight. Age, sex and weight all affect metabolism. Calorie burn is also determined by your body's ratio of lean muscle to fat. Lean muscle mass burns calories faster than fat. Heredity also plays a key role in metabolic rate.
  1. Exercise

    • Exercise, particularly strength training, is one of the most efficient methods to increase metabolism, because it builds muscle, which burns more calories than fat, according to WebMD. Aerobic workouts will provide a temporary increase in metabolism. Choose high intensity aerobic workouts like running for an added boost. Aim for 30 to 60 minutes of exercise at least three times a week.

    Eat Frequently

    • Metabolism slows when long periods of time elapse between meals. WebMD notes a study at Georgia State University which found that eating frequent small snacks resulted in a higher metabolism, more energy and less body fat. To keep metabolism high, eat several small meals throughout the day instead of just three large ones. Or, eat three moderately sized meals and incorporate small healthy snacks into your daily routine.

    Choose Metabolism-Boosting Foods

    • Certain foods may boost your metabolism. Protein increases metabolism for a longer period of time than other foods because it takes longer for the body to digest. WebMD notes that eating spicy foods may provide a temporary metabolic jump start. Green tea contains EGCG, or epiallocatechin gallate, which if consumed in large amounts is believed to increase metabolism. Black coffee will also provide a metabolic boost; avoid adding additional fat and calories with cream and sugar.

    Stay Hydrated

    • Dehydration causes metabolism to slow down. Drink eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated and keep your metabolism running on high. According to WebMD, research suggests that drinking ice cold water may give your metabolism an added boost as your body works to warm the water to body temperature.
