How to Troubleshoot a Stairmaster 4600 Cl

The Stairmaster provides excellent an cardiovascular workout without leaving your home, which is helpful during inclement weather. The 4600CL has an alternator (controlled electronically), a computer console, that provides statistics of your workout and control buttons that allow you to increase or decrease your speed. There are three primary factors to consider when troubleshooting: electrical, diagnostics and mechanical.

Instructions

  1. Electrical

    • 1

Unplug the battery by removing the middle and top covers of the control board. Look toward the end of the cable to the pins and find 1 & 2 and test the voltage with a voltmeter. You want to see a reading of no less than 6.1. If it is below this number, reconnect the battery and charge it overnight or for a minimum of 24 hours. If all readings are within range, replace the console.

    • 2

Check the output of the alternator by unplugging the battery as you did in Step 1. Remove both the black and brown wires from the alternator terminal and attach a short wire to the alternator on the B1 terminal. Carefully, get on the machine for a few seconds checking if you have full resistance the entire time. If you feel no resistance, this indicates that the alternator needs replacing.

    • 3

Test the load resistor with the voltmeter by placing a lead from the treaded posts on the resistor (disconnect from the control panel) to the voltmeter. Check for a reading of 2.5 Ohms. If you do not see this reading, the load resistor is bad and in need of replacement.

    Diagnostics

    • 4

Begin the diagnostic tests by putting the console in the "Attract" mode and press [+] and the numbers 1, 0, 7 and then "Enter." The diagnostic test is to determine if the console needs replacing. The treadmill should pass each test. After each test is complete, press the "Clear" button and move to the next diagnostic.

    • 5

Press 0 to test the display. You want to see the lights flash off and on at the same time. Press 1 to test the speaker, which you will hear an ascending/descending musical scale. Next press 2 to see if the keypad is working properly. You should see the shape of an "L" made with the lights. Begin to press each button that corresponds to the lights. If you do not see a light come on, this indicates the keypad is not working.

    • 6

Prepare to exercise for a short time for the speed test. Press 3 and you will see a speed appear on the console as your "Target." As you begin to move, the pedals will begin to increase until they reach the set speed. If the diagnostics failed any of the tests performed, replace the console.

    Mechanical

    • 7

Check the drive train if you hear noises such as grinding or increased vibration during your exercise routine. Unplug the Stairmaster and take off the covers on both sides.

    • 8

Look at the belt to see if it is worn or not fitted properly. If the belt is not secure, this can be a cause of the noise heard during the exercise routine.

    • 9

Move each of the drive and step chains to see if they move freely. Replace the chains if you notice rust, damage or if they are stiff. In addition, remove the shafts for the pedal and leveling arms. Look for damage and a collection of debris. Clean with a soft cloth lightly dampened with oil. Replace the arm and lever shafts when finished.
