Skin Resiliency After Weight Loss

Skin, the largest organ in the body, has the ability to be resilient to excess weight loss. This resiliency depends upon factors like age, skin type, exposure to sun and proper nutrition.
  1. Factors

    • Skin is very elastic. You can gauge its resiliency by your age at the time of your weight loss, and how long you were overweight. The slower your weight gain and loss, the more likely your skin has not been overstretched to the point of losing some of its elasticity. Skin resiliency decreases after the age of 40.

    Time Frame

    • Weight loss of 1 to 2 lbs. a week will give your skin the best chance at bouncing back from your weight loss. Heavier people can lose up to 3 lbs. a week with the same results. Rapid weight loss will most likely produce folds of skin that will not go back to shape without surgery.

    Considerations

    • Skin creams and lotions have not been shown to improve loose skin. Surgery to remove excess skin should be a final option, as it is considered a major procedure. It should only be considered after dieting has been completed.
