Limit your sodium intake to 2,300 milligrams every day. A high-sodium diet causes fluid retention throughout the body, and can make your fingers look swollen. By reducing your sodium intake, your body will flush out stored fluid.

Consult your physician about a weight-loss program appropriate for you. Eat a diet high in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and low in processed foods and fats. Drink eight glasses of water daily to help rid your body of toxins and keep you full. Snack on nuts or dried fruit instead of chips and candy. Do not drink soda.

Develop an exercise plan with your doctor to help you lose the weight quicker. Try going for a 30-minute walk after dinner. Swimming is also a low-impact exercise that is appropriate for almost any body type. Do daily exercises that focus on the fingers, such as typing or playing the piano or guitar. Limit your hand exercises to 30 minutes a day, so you don't increase the muscle size and add bulk.
