Foods That Zap Fat

If you're trying to lose weight, it's important to exclude certain foods in your diet, such as high-fat foods, but you may want to add other foods that are known to break down fat easier so that you can zap fat faster. In addition to zapping fat and losing weight, these healthy foods can also decrease your risk of developing diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.
  1. Leafy Greens

    • Leafy greens, such as spinach, can help the body metabolize fat faster, leading to weight loss. In addition, vegetable intake is associated with weight loss. A study in "Obesity Research," which looked at over 150 men and women who dieted for 18 months, found that increasing vegetable consumption was related to a decreasing body mass index (BMI). The American Heart Association recommends at least 4.5 cups a day of fruits and vegetables for both losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight. Vegetables can replace high-fat foods to improve nutrition and aid in weight loss.

    Salmon

    • Salmon can stimulate the metabolism and help burn fat faster, according to Fox News. A study in "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" looked at 69 overweight people and compared a weight loss program with a daily diet of fish to a normal weight loss program. Not only did the group eating fish lose weight, but their risk of diabetes and heart disease decreased as well. At least two servings of fish per week can go a long way in aiding weight loss and improving metabolism.

    Whole Grains

    • Whole grains can help the body to metabolize fats and get more energy from food. Another study from "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" surveyed over 70,000 women in the U.S. over 12 years, assessing their weight, health and dietary habits. Women who consumed more whole grains consistently weighed less than others, and had an easier time losing weight and keeping a healthy weight. Replacing cereals and breads with whole grain alternatives can aid weight loss. The American Heart Association recommends three servings of whole grains per day.

    Chili Peppers

    • Chili peppers contain capsaicin, a compound which, in addition to giving chili its signature spiciness, may boost the metabolism and zap fat cells. Consuming chili peppers may help fat-burning exercises to be more effective.
