Can Xango Juice Reduce Obesity?

XanGo Juice is made from the fruit Garcinia mangostana (also known as mangosteen) and is bursting with a large supply of xanthones; thus, the name XanGo. While this juice has health benefits, it is not a miracle cure for obesity.
  1. Benefits

    • According to the Weight Loss Advisor website, xanthones are naturally occurring chemicals that are said to promote flexibility, mental support, immune function and energy levels. A healthier you can lead to a thinner you, but weight loss is not a direct or sudden result.

    Lack of Evidence

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, there are currently no human clinical trials that prove the beneficial health effects of XanGo Juice.

    Lack of Integrity

    • The FDA has cracked down on the makers of XanGo Juice due to their unsupported claims of being able to treat various health effects. The company was given 15 days to show that it was no longer making illegitimate claims regarding the product.

    Acidosis

    • According to a 2008 case report, a patient using mangosteen daily for weight loss came down with acidosis, a condition in which the individual's blood acidity is too high (at a pH of less than 7.35). According to the MedlinePlus website, acidosis can cause rapid breathing, confusion, lethargy, and even shock or death.

    Price

    • In 2010, a single bottle of XanGo Juice cost $40. Frederic Patenaude, a health and nutrition author and a raw food advocate, stated on his blog: "When I look at a $35 bottle of 'anti-oxidant-rich' mangosteen juice, I can't help to laugh and think to myself, 'what kind of idiot would spend that kind of money (plus shipping) for a bottle of fruit juice.'"
