How to Convert a Regular Bike to a Stationary Bike

If you are a biking enthusiast, you may think your exercise regimen has hit a major snag when winter comes. Stationary bicycles are expensive and many people do not feel that spending the amount of money they demand is worth it simply to accommodate one inconvenient season. The good news is, there is a way to convert your regular bicycle, meant for outdoor riding, into a safe, indoor stationary bike so that you never have to miss a beat--or a spin.

Things You'll Need

  • Indoor bicycle trainer stand with resistance
  • Rubber floor mat large enough to fit beneath the entire bike
  • Netted bicycle cover, also called a "sweat net"
  • Soft cloths
  • Disinfecting spray

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a place indoors that will be convenient for your stationary bicycle and clear away clutter from the area.

    • 2

Place the rubber mat and smooth out any folds or wrinkles. Set the indoor bicycle trainer stand in the center of the mat and open the holders.

    • 3

Place your bicycle into the trainer stand and fasten the holders. Connect the resistance included with your trainer stand to your bicycle as directed by the directions for the particular stand you've chosen.

    • 4

Position the netted bicycle cover over your new stationary bicycle. It will protect the bicycle from the majority of falling sweat and other fluids, preventing frame corrosion.

    • 5

Spray a soft cloth with disinfecting spray and wipe the bicycle handles and seat each time that you use your stationary bicycle.
