Advice for a Double Chin

Double chins are problems for men and women of all ages, caused by sources as diverse as weight, heredity, posture, and menopause. Individuals with double chins do not have to simply accept them, however; there are a number of ways to reduce their impact or get rid of them altogether. People with double chins should consider their options and find the solution that best fits their preferences and lifestyle.
  1. Hairstyle Changes

    • Choose shorter hairstyles, as long hair naturally draws the eyes of onlookers to the neck. By keeping hair cut to the jawline or above, the focus of onlookers' glances will be on the face instead of the neck (and your double chin).

    Clothing Changes

    • Pick shirts that have wide necks, letting them draw attention to the shoulders and base of the neck instead of the upper neck where double chins appear. Accessories such as necklaces, head wraps, hats, and scarves can also be used to hide a double chin, but make sure that you don't overdo it or you will emphasize the fact that you're trying to hide something.

    Posture Adjustment

    • Adjusting your posture can greatly reduce a double chin. Keep your posture straight with your neck stretched and your head held back slightly; this will make the neck longer, stretching the double chin and pulling the skin closer to your neck instead of letting it hang.

    Makeup Emphasis

    • Emphasize the features of your face if you wear makeup, especially the cheekbones and features of the upper face. Use warm colors to give yourself a bright and appealing appearance, drawing attention to your face and away from your double chin.

    Excercise and Weight Loss

    • Perform exercises such as rolling your head slowly through its full range of motion, tilting your head forward to touch your chest with your chin for five to ten seconds, or tilting your head back to hold your chin out for five to ten seconds; these can be repeated multiple times per exercise session. Combine exercises such as these that build the neck and jaw muscles with a sensible diet to help yourself lose weight and firm the neck area where your double chin appears.

    Liposuction and Plastic Surgery

    • Visit a plastic surgeon and discuss your options to have your double chin surgically treated if you are unable to reduce it or draw emphasis away from it to your satisfaction. The surgical options available to you will depend largely on the cause of your double chin, but there will likely be at least one or two procedures that can be used to completely eliminate it. Keep in mind the fact that recovery may be uncomfortable and that there may be significant costs associated with the procedures that you choose.
