The New Beverly Hills Diet

The original Beverly Hills Diet was a restrictive 42-day diet, but the New Beverly Hills Diet is more moderate, "meeting all standards set by the U.S. Senate Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs as recommended for a balanced weekly diet," according to the author of the Beverly Hills diet books, Judy Mazel. The New Beverly Hills Diet, like the original, is a food-combining diet. Mazel claims that when you eat and in what combination you eat it is more important than exactly what you eat.
  1. Conscious Combining

    • Combine your foods to lose weight and attain overall, lifelong health. According to the ideas propounded in the new Beverly Hills Diet, there are certain rules for combining the foods you eat during meals and snacks, and if you follow them, you will be successful. No calorie counting, no portion control. Mazel calls this "Conscious Combining." If you follow the rules of the plan, you can expect to lose 15 to 20 pounds in the first 35 days you are on the diet.

The basics of Conscious Combining are not difficult to remember. Proteins should be eaten together with other proteins. Once you have eaten any source of protein, no matter how small, 80 percent of what you eat for the rest of the day should also be protein. Carbohydrates should be eaten together with other carbohydrates. Proteins and carbohydrates are not to be eaten together. Most alcoholic drinks are considered carbohydrates and should only be taken with other carbohydrates. There are two exceptions: champagne, which is considered neutral and may be consumed with anything, and wine, which is classified as a fruit and therefore falls under the fruit rules.

    Fruit

    • Eat fruit alone. Fruit is considered a whole category unto itself, and there is an entire set of rules just them: when to eat fruit, mixing fruits (don't), how long you should wait before eating more fruit. Fats can be eaten with either carbohydrates or proteins, but are not to be eaten with fruit. Breakfast should be some kind of fruit, but only one kind, and you should wait one hour before eating any other kind of fruit and two hours before eating any other kind of food. You can, however, eat as much of the one fruit as you like.

    Beverages

    • Eliminate all beverages which contain artificial sweeteners, and, of course, do not add artificial sweeteners to your drinks. Non-dairy creamer and margarine are also forbidden. Foods with any kind of artificial additives, such as preservatives and colors, are highly discouraged.

    Warning

    • Don't begin a diet plan without consulting your doctor or another qualified medical professional. The concept of food combining has not been medically proven.
