List your height. If you are not already aware of it, you need to be measured. If you can't get the information from your doctor, a tape measure can be used. Stand up against a wall and have a friend measure your height.

Get your current weight, either from your doctor or by stepping on a scale.

Calculate your BMI. There is a simple formula used to figure out a person's BMI. Multiply your height in inches by itself to calculate "A." Divide your weight, in pounds, by "A" to calculate "B." Multiply "B" by 703 to calculate your BMI.

Consult a BMI chart. It is easy to find one on the Internet by typing "BMI chart" into a search engine. On the charts, you will be able to see how your BMI relates to your height and weight.

By reading the BMI chart, you will see what a healthy percentage is for someone your height. If you are above this, you need to lose weight. If you are below, it is possible you need to gain weight for optimum health. You can also use the formulas to determine an appropriate weight by plugging in your ideal BMI into the equation and solving for weight. This will give you a new weight-loss or weight-gain goal.
