Body Fat Reducing Supplements

An increasingly large number of people wish they could lose those few extra pounds, whether it is to fit into those perfect jeans or just to be a little healthier. Some supplements may be able to help with this goal.

General Categories of Body Fat Reducing Supplements

    • Three types of fat reducing supplements are generally safe and have been proven to work: EGCG, CLA and Orlistat. New supplements are coming out all the time, and it is important to read the label to know about potential harm and to see what proof there is of the supplement actually helping people lose weight. Some supplements can cause damage if taken incorrectly, so it is important to be careful when taking supplements.

    EGCG

    • EGCG is Epigallocatechin Gallate and is commonly found in tea. EGCG is the main antioxidant in tea. There is considerably more EGCG in green and white tea than in black tea. Research suggests that EGCG helps boost metabolism and suppress appetite, and helps keep your heart healthy so that a person can keep up with a cardio program. People who take supplements containing EGCG can lose up to 20 pounds. ECCG also has been found to help fight cancer, heart disease and HIV, in addition to helping people lose weight.

    CLA

    • CLA, like EGCG, is an antioxidant. CLA, known as Conjugate Linoleic Acid, is a naturally occurring fatty acid that can be found in both dairy and meat products. CLA prevents fat cells from getting bigger and must be taken with a balanced diet and moderate exercise. When a person loses a little weight from eating better and exercise, CLA helps keep the fat off by inhibiting fat cells' ability to store more fat. CLA does have some risks, including an increased risk of diabetes and in some cases may make people unresponsive to insulin treatments.

    Orlistat

    • Orlistat is also known as Tetrahydrolipstatin. Orlistat is used to fight obesity by blocking the absorption of fat. Orlistat does have the side effect of steatorrhea, which is oily and loose bowel movements. People who take supplements with Orlistat usually lose 50 percent more weight than people who do not use Orlistat. The FDA has approved the use of Orlistat as a fat blocker. Orlistat works best for people who are on a balanced diet with moderate exercise.

    Important Note

    • Whenever a person takes new supplements, she should consult her physician first. When taking a supplement, read the label carefully and do not exceed the recommended dosage. Some supplements can be dangerous if taken improperly or when taken over a long period of time. Some supplements are safe to use, but do not expect a miracle drug that will magically make you skinny. These supplements often only fulfill their claims if the person eats balanced meals and does moderate exercise.
