Will Acai Berry Cause Significant Weight Loss?
In an article on Oprah.com, Dr. Nicholas Perricone proclaimed acai berry as the number one "Superfood" of 2009. The fruit is promoted primarily for its antioxidant features. It is also sold as a weight loss supplement.-
History
-
Brazilians have used acai berry for years to cure simple skin conditions and digestive disorders, none of which were related to weight loss.
Features
-
The acai berry is a black, purplish fruit that grows in Central and South America. It is a relative of other berries that are high in antioxidants, such as cranberry and blueberry.
According to Vitaminsdiary.com, the acai berry contains 10 times as much antioxidant as grapes, and twice as much as blueberries. In a 2008 study conducted by the "Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry," however, acai berry juice was found to contain less antioxidant activity than pomegranate juice, blueberry juice and Concord grape juice.
Significance
-
According to Everydiet.org, promoters of the acai berry claim that the fruit contains essential amino acids, fatty acids and phytosterols that can reduce appetite, enhance digestion and improve metabolism.
Potentials
-
Aside from weight loss, according to Dr. Perricone, acai berry is said to be rich in essential vitamins and minerals that can prevent premature aging, treat digestive problems and cure cancer cells .
Dr. Susanne Talcott of the University of Florida agrees that acai berry has promising potentials, but she believes that it is not the ultimate answer to weight loss and should only be part of a well-balanced diet.
Misconceptions
-
According to Annalisa O. Jenner of Vanderbilt University, although acai berry products are being heavily marketed in the U.S., no competent scientific research confirms that antioxidants found in acai berries can aid weight loss.
