HCG for Weight Loss
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin is a hormone naturally found in pregnant women. It is also present when patients are afflicted with some types of cancer. Doctors prescribe hCG as a fertility medication or a testosterone producer.-
Claims
-
In 1954, Dr. Albert T. Simeons claimed hCG shots and a diet of 500 calories a day would result in a suppressed appetite and fat distribution. Simeons claimed the regimen would result in weight loss of one to three pounds a day, but he presented no studies to support his theory.
Diet
-
A Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) is one that provides 800 calories or less per day. This caloric intake is too low to support brain function and your body will draw energy from your muscles instead of your excess fat.
Studies
-
A double blind study in 2007 conducted by the hCG Research Clinic shows people on a VLCD and those on a VLCD and hCG realized equal hunger and weight loss. The weight loss is attributed to the calorie deficit and not the injections.
FDA
-
The Food and Drug Administration has not approved hCG for weight loss and requires a disclaimer be used with any advertisement for such use.
Conclusion
-
There is no scientific data that supports hCG's weight-loss benefits. Consumer reviews are mixed, but considering the drug has been banned by Major League Baseball and has nasty side effects such as nausea, pelvic pain and blood clots, it is best to stay away.
