Calorie Burning for Weight Loss

Many people struggle with a few extra pounds around the middle. It would be a lot easier to lose the weight if there was a magic number of calories per day that you knew you had to burn in order to lose that weight. Unfortunately, there is no magic number. There is however, a law concerning calories and weight loss. It is called the law of thermodynamics.
  1. The Law of Thermodynamics

    • Simply stated, the law of thermodynamics, can be defined as a person's body burning more calories, or energy, than it consumes. This deficit in calories will result in subsequent weight loss. For example, if a person consumes 1,500 calories in one day and in that same day burns 2,000 calories by exercise and daily routine, then that person would have a deficit of 500 calories that day. With one pound of fat equaling 3,500 calories, that person should lose 1 pound per week by remaining in a 500 calorie deficit for each day of that week.

The National Academy of Sports Medicine focuses its programs and teachings on this law. So, in short, to properly utilize this law, start out by keeping a food and exercise log. There are many helpful calorie calculators and nutritional info calorie charts online that can help you determine how many calories per day you are burning and how many calories per day you are consuming. According to The National Academy of Sports Medicine, if you remain in a caloric deficit on a consistent basis you will, in fact, lose weight.
