Exercise Equipment for Step Classes
Step aerobics is one of the simplest of aerobic exercise classes, and that simplicity appeals to many clients, as well as instructors. You need very little equipment, and the effects are just as rewarding as other aerobic exercise. Step aerobics is also an excellent choice for those with knee problems, because step works on strengthening the muscles that surround and support the knee.-
The Step
-
While you can buy commercially available steps, any platform will work. The platform can vary from 4 to 6 inches high and must be wide enough for you to stand on with both feet. Anything that meets these dimensions and is stable enough to hold a person moving rapidly up and down on it will serve as a step for the aerobics class.
The Floor
-
An obvious but necessary piece of equipment for a step aerobics is a flat floor. You cannot have a leaning or bumpy floor. It needs to be non-slippery and solid.
Proper Footwear
-
You need cross-training sneakers for a step workout. Barefoot will not work. Step places too much stress on the foot and too much friction--it will cause blisters. Socks without athletic shoes are too slippery. Good quality sneakers, such as Nike or Reebok, are a must for this particular exercise.
Music
-
A good workout requires a good beat. You need music--preferably something upbeat and with a good rhythm--so you can step in time with the music. Modern music is the best bet. Play it throughout the workout to keep the exercise going and enjoyable. Remember to have fun while you work out and you'll keep coming back for more.
