Herbs That are Proven to Help with Weight Loss

Herbs have long been looked at to help with weight loss. Besides healthy eating and exercise, herbs can be an effective tool with losing weight, says Douglas Schar, a clinically trained herbalist in Washington, D.C.
  1. St. John's Wort

    • St. John's Wort is good for strengthening the nervous system by increasing the neurotransmitters needed for proper functioning, Schar says. It is recommended for those who give in to eating when they are under stress,

    Oat Straw

    • Oat Straw has been used since ancient times to help alcoholics, heroin addicts and smokers find the will power to quit their addiction. Schar says oat straw has also been found to help with withdrawal symptoms.

    Black Cohosh

    • Black Cohosh has been shown to ease symptoms of mood swings in menopausal women, and it works with mood swings caused by dieting, Schar said. He recommends using black cohosh only if hormone replacement therapy is not also being taken.

    Cordyceps

    • Cordyceps is an ancient Chinese remedy for fatigue which works by increasing stamina and a sense of well being. Schar says that endurance athletes and body builders both use this mushroom to lengthen their workouts.

    Siberian Ginseng

    • Siberian Ginseng is another herb used to prolong endurance and increase stamina, and is particularly good with workouts. Siberian Ginseng has been in use in Asia for many years, and has been found to increase a person's ability to work.

    Psyllium Seed

    • Psyllium Seed is pure fiber which swells up to four times its size when it comes in contact with water. Schar recommends Psyllium seed to help with lowering cholesterol. It also gives the feeling of satiety and fullness.
