How to Stop Eating When You Are Not Hungry

Eating is necessary to sustain health. Without the consumption of calories we would die. Our internal sense of hunger signals to the body that it must consume calories at certain intervals, but oftentimes people eat without thinking about it, or consume food even though they are not hungry. There are several useful strategies to stop eating when you are not hungry.

      Exercise instead. Exercise can be a means of distracting the body. Instead of consuming calories, go for a walk, run on a treadmill or drive to the gym. Engaging in physical activity can help provide the motivation to avoid eating unnecessarily. It is hard to consume calories when you are sitting on an exercise bike.

      Drink water. Water helps you stay hydrated and allows you to put something in your mouth other than food. Use very cold water to make it a refreshing treat and serve it in a pretty glass to make it more attractive.

      Brush your teeth. Brushing your teeth can help you avoid eating anything else. It also may signal to the body that it is time to stop eating.

      Have sex. A good romp in bed can release endorphins, reduce hunger and make you feel better.

      Take a shower or bath. Reward your body with a long soothing bubble bath. Read a book and relax in the tub. Leave scented candles around to create a pleasant mood.

      Get on the scale. If you are actively trying to lose weight, the scale is your ally Every time you think about eating, step on the scale. Remind yourself that you are attempting to reach a certain weight goal and eating when you are not hungry will sabotage that goal.
