Food Combining & Weight Loss
Several diets today rely on a certain combination of foods for quick weight loss. The Zone Diet, for example recommends 30 percent each of fat and protein and 40 percent "good" carbohydrates. Even for those not on the Zone diet, most experts will agree that there are certain food groups that should be part of a healthy diet, which can help you drop pounds safely and quickly. A well-rounded diet of protein, fruits and vegetables and whole grains is a good combination for weight loss.-
Protein
-
Lean proteins like chicken, lean beef, egg whites, beans and certain types of fish are good for weight loss because they help build muscle mass---the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism. Also, proteins keep you feeling fuller longer because they digest slowly. Even proteins with some kinds of fats in them, such as nuts and certain types of fish can be very good for weight loss for the same reasons lean proteins are, with the added benefit of Omega 3s, which studies show speed metabolism and are good for heart and brain function.
Fruits and Veggies
-
Fruits and veggies are another important aspect of a combination weight loss diet. They contain a large amount of fiber, which, like protein, help you feel fuller longer. Fiber also regulates insulin levels because it does not cause a spike in blood sugar, thus keeping your metabolism on track. Some of the best fruits and veggies for weight loss include kale, berries, pomegranates, apples, avocados (which contain healthy fats) and chiles, which contain capsaicin, an ingredient that increases heart rate and speeds up metabolism.
Whole Grains
-
Whole grains are another powerful weight loss food that are also packed with fiber. In addition to being filling and not causing a spike in insulin levels (which can lead to weight gain), soluble fiber is thought to actually prevent fat from being absorbed into the body during digestion. When buying whole grain bread, look for "Whole Wheat" in the ingredients rather than "Enriched wheat flour." Other good whole grains include quinoa, oats and buckwheat.
