Apple Cider Vinegar Weight Loss Diets

Apple cider vinegar is an inexpensive product, well known among folk remedies, that is credited with helping such a variety of conditions as osteoporosis, arthritis, high blood pressure, upset stomach, leg cramps, sinus problems, sore throats, acne, sunburn and insect bites. Although its effectiveness has not been proven, it has even become a popular dietary aid for weight loss.
  1. How It Works

    • Apple cider vinegar is made from fermented apples and is believed to assist in weight loss by improving cases of insulin resistance. In this condition, the muscle, fat and liver cells resist insulin, a hormone, and glucose, a blood sugar, both of which are needed to provide energy.

The acetic acid in apple cider vinegar apparently interferes with the enzymes that digest carbohydrates, thus allowing the carbs to go through the digestive tract undigested.

Apple cider vinegar has also become popular as an appetite suppressant, but there is no proof that apple cider vinegar alone, or in combination with other supplements, can speed up metabolism or help us burn fat.

    Dosage

    • To try apple cider vinegar for weight loss and other uses, don't use the refined product that is available in supermarkets. Instead, buy organic vinegar that is unfiltered and unpasteurized. To use apple cider vinegar as a diet aid, mix one or two tablespoons in an equal amount of water and drink it before a meal. Alternatively, you can swallow two or three teaspoons (no more than three) 15 to 20 minutes before every meal.

To make the taste more palatable, add a bit of honey or a natural sweetener such as stevia.

If you still find the taste unpleasant, you might prefer to take vinegar as a supplement. Apple cider vinegar capsules are available in most supermarkets and drug stores.

Another diet-wise use of apple cider vinegar would be to mix it with olive oil, which is also a healthful food, and pour it over a salad of fresh greens to start your meal.

Ask your doctor before beginning to use apple cider vinegar, especially if you are on medication. Possible side effects of excessive or prolonged use include low blood potassium and low bone mineral density. Apple cider vinegar could also interact with medicine for diabetes, high blood pressure and other conditions.
