How to Overcome Food Cravings

If you've ever gone on a diet, you know how hard it can be to overcome food cravings. You may have a craving for certain foods, like sweets. You may have a certain time of day when food cravings typically start, like late at night. Oftentimes, you give in to it, feel guilty afterward, say to yourself, "What the heck, might as well eat it all," and before you know it, the cycle repeats. Luckily, you can do something to resist food cravings before they overtake you.

Instructions

    • 1

Indulge in your food cravings, don't ignore them. Ignoring the cravings will only make them worse. But don't go crazy; only eat a serving (or two, at most).

    • 2

Gradually cut down on eating unhealthy foods. At the beginning of a diet, most people try to quit full stop, and they only end up overindulging down the road. By slowly eliminating as much of the unhealthy food as you can, you stand a better chance of making healthier eating choices for as long as you live, not just for the life of the diet.

    • 3

Incorporate more healthy foods and exercise into your diet. This raises your metabolism, which helps you to overcome those food cravings.

    • 4

Drink a glass of water when you notice the first signs of a food craving. This works especially well for sugar lovers who tend to give in to their sweet tooth, but water works in curbing your appetite overall.

    • 5

Eat all of your meals. Skipping meals increases hunger pains, which in turn increase the possibility of you grabbing anything to eat even if it's bad for you.

    • 6

Try eating six small and healthy meals throughout the day. Your stomach won't feel empty and you'll think less of food the rest of the day; therefore, you'll be less likely to overeat when you have food cravings.
