Measure your standard height (in inches) and weight (in pounds). Some calculators allow you to enter the data as feet and inches.

Enter your data into the requested fields. Some will want to know if you are male or female, but generally speaking, body fat is calculated the same way for men and women. Women traditionally have a higher ratio of body fat because they need the extra fat to insulate their organs during pregnancy.

Record your BMI results, particularly if you are using the information as part of a weight loss program. Some weight loss plans such as Weight Watchers record your BMI to calculate your progress.

Speak to a physician about your results if they are consistently high, particularly if you are trying to lose weight.

Check multiple sites to verify your results and their calculations. If you get the same result from three or more sites, then you're correctly calculating your BMI.
