How to Cut a Spot in a Shoe Sole for a Nike Sensor

The Nike sensor works in conjunction with Apple's iPod and iPhone to track the distance you walked or ran, total time spent, calories burned and pace. Nike makes shoes that include a compartment designed to accommodate the sensor in the sole. If you don't want purchase a new pair of shoes just for the purpose of working out, you can cut a spot for the sensor. To avoid cutting into your shoe, you can also purchase or create a Nike sensor pouch.

Instructions

  1. Cut Hole

    • 1

Pull up the foam insert, or cushion inside the shoe. You don't have to pull up the entire insert, just the first half to allow room to access the sole.

    • 2

Place the Nike sensor on the sole of the shoe.

    • 3

Trace the outline of the sensor with a pen or pencil. Then remove the sensor.

    • 4

Score the outline created with the utility knife to a depth of about one centimeter.

    • 5

Insert the tip of the knife underneath scored section to detach it and remove it completely from the shoe. Put the fabric someplace where you can retrieve it later when you decide to take the sensor out.

    • 6

Place the Nike sensor in the cutout, and push back down the foam insert.

    Create Pouch

    • 7

Place the Nike sensor in the corner of a small and clear, plastic bag.

    • 8

Cut the bag in a square around the sensor with a pair of scissors. Allow the square to be two cm wider and taller than the sensor.

    • 9

Wrap the plastic cutout neatly around the sensor, then tape the top and side of it closed with clear, plastic tape.

    • 10

Cut each of the four tips of the cutout diagonally to create a hole to insert the shoe laces.

    • 11

Criss-cross the end of your shoe laces through the holes to secure it to your shoe.
