How to Calculate Your Daily Point Total

The Weight Watchers program uses a point system to help you lose weight and keep it off. The daily point total is the number of points from foods you are allowed to eat to stay on track. The calculation is based on several factors including weight, gender, age and activity level.

Write down the base points for gender. Men start with eight points. Women start with two points. A nursing mother should have 12 points as her base calculation, unless she is supplementing with solid food or formula. If supplementing, a nursing mother should start with five points.

    • 2

Add the points for age. Anyone between 17 and 26 years old should add four points. For those ages 27 to 37, add three points. Anyone between age 38 and 47 should add two points. For those from ages 48 to 58, add one point. Anyone older than 58 should not add any points.

    • 3

Calculate the weight points. The weight points are based on the first two digits of your weight. For example, if you weigh 170 pounds, you should add 17 points. Only factor the first two digits. If you weigh 179 pounds, it is still 17 points.

    • 4

Add points for height. Anyone who is 5 feet tall or shorter should not add any points. If you are between 5 feet 1 inch and 5 feet 10 inches, add one point. Anyone taller than five feet 10 inches should add two points.

Consider activity level through the day. Anyone who sits most of the day, such as someone who works at a desk job and rarely moves around at home, should not add points. For those who are moderately active, such as sitting most of the day, but with some standing and walking, add two points. Anyone who walks around most of the time should add four points. For those individuals who are extremely active and constantly moving, such as someone who is on their feet for the entire day, should add six points.

Calculate the total. Add up all of the points. For example, if you are female and nursing, 25 years old, weigh 130 pounds, are 5 feet 3 inches tall and moderately active, you would add 12 + 4 + 13 + 1 + 2 to get a total of 32 points for the day.
