      Wash the Safety 1st thermometer tip with dish soap and water before using it. Dry with a paper towel.

      Set the thermometer under the baby's tongue if taking the temperature orally. Close the baby's mouth and press the one and only button on the thermometer to begin taking her temperature. Wait for the thermometer to beep before removing it from your baby's mouth. According to Safety 1st, this can take up to one minute.

      Place the Safety 1st thermometer tip under the baby's arm in the middle of the armpit. Hold your baby's arm over the thermometer and press the button to begin taking his temperature. Wait up to 60 seconds for the thermometer to beep before reading the results.

      Slide a protective sleeve over the tip of the Safety 1st thermometer if you intend on taking the baby's temperature rectally. Add petroleum jelly to the tip and slide 1/2 inch of the tip in the rectum. Press the button and wait up to 40 seconds for the thermometer to beep, indicating that the temperature has been found.

      Throw away any protective covers and wipe down the tip with an alcohol soaked cotton ball. Store in the Safety 1st protective storage case.
