How to Apply Diaper Cream

Diaper rash is caused by infrequent diaper changes, allergic reaction, or too much acid in the urine or a change in diet. Diaper cream is used to treat diaper rash while protecting the baby's bottom from more irritation. Diaper creams will seal out moisture to prevent diaper rash from progressing and give the skin time to heal when diaper rash is apparent. Diaper creams must be applied correctly to work effectively.

Instructions

    • 1

Evaluate your baby's bottom each time you change the diaper. Look for signs of swelling, blisters, chapped or red skin. These signs can indicate a diaper rash.

    • 2

Use a warm washcloth and mild soap to clean the area gently. If you are unable to use a washcloth, use a wet wipe to clean the area. It is important to clean between the legs and up the back and stomach where the diaper fits.

    • 3

Use a zinc oxide-based cream for a diaper rash. Place your finger in the wet wipe and squeeze out just a small amount of cream on the wet wipe. Apply the cream to the affected areas. Don't forget to apply cream in the creases by the legs and under the scrotum on a boy. Put on the new diaper.

    • 4

Use a petrolatum-based diaper cream as a preventive measure, only after the diaper rash has cleared up. Apply a thin coat to the bottom area. This will protect the skin by blocking out moisture.

    • 5

Call your pediatrician if the diaper rash does not get any better after one week.
